Even though all dogs deserve a dog bed, not everyone can afford to buy one. Should you find yourself in that position, all hope is not lost, you can make your own pet bed right there at home!

There are a few things that you should think about before you get started on making your dog a bed. Such as, where your going to put the bed, the size of your dog, what climate your in, the type of material that you have to make the bed out of, does your dog need the bed quickly, and how thick your going to make it.

Where are you going to put the bed?

There are two basic types of pet beds, one for inside and one for outside.

The indoor version are the types that you will find inside a home in locations like a corner, in a dog create, near the foot of the bed, or other such dog specific location. Before you ever get started on making your pet a bed you will need to think about where your planning on putting it. If you do it just right you can make a pet bed that will be a custom fit to a corner or other area in your home.

The outside version are the type that you can put in a kennel, near your door, in a dog run or any other location that you would like to have your pets bed at.

How big is your dog?

Keep in mind that your dog will need room on its bed, just like you do. A big dog will need a big bed. In fact that’s just one of the reasons why dog bed can get so expensive, the bigger the bed the bigger the cost. If you need things to make your pet bed out of you can check out thrift stores for things like old recliners, couches, and even mattresses and for a good price too. After you have the size of the bed figured out then you can pick up the materials that you will need. Don’t forget to take a measurement of your dog, since your dog will sleeping on the bed I suggest that you take your measurements while its laying down asleep. Remember that making a bed that’s a bit too big will be better than making one that is too small.

What climate do you live in?

Keep in mind that if you are in a cold climate that you might want to make a thick and heavy dog bed to help keep your pet warm. You see, the dog bed will be on the floor or the ground and heat rises, that means that your dog could be laying in a very cold place.

Of course if you are in a warmer climate then you may find that fleas are an issue. If that is the case then you should think about making your pet bed from PVC that is covered in canvas or mesh material to help keep the flea issue down.

What type of material do you have to make the bed out of?

There are many things that you might find laying around your home, in your garage or even in a thrift store that you can make your pet bed out of. These are going to be things like old couches, recliners, sleeping bags, quilts, pillows and other such items. The possibilities are really endless and once you start to think about it you will find all sorts of things that you can make your pet bed out of! In fact if you happen to have an old love seat you can simply put a sheet over it and you have a pet bed for a large dog! Of course that will take up some room but it will work. You can create an outside cot by putting together a frame made from PVC and the bed can be made of a canvas like material!

Does your dog need the bed quickly?

Should you find yourself in a situation where you need a pet bed instantly and you don’t really have time to make anything you can always take an old blanket and fold it up and put it on the floor for the dog. If you happen to have a piece of foam laying around you can put that in between the folds of the blanket to give it more cushion. You can also use carpeting, sleeping bags, towels and other such items. In a pinch you can put a sheet over these things so that you can clean it once in a while until you get a moment to make a better bed.

How thick are you going to make the bed?

When your thinking about how thick to make your pet bed keep in mind what type of climate you live in and where your going to put it. If your making a bed for an older dog you may want to make the bed thicker than you normally would to help ease their pains. Its suggested that you use at least seven inches of foam for a proper orthopedic bed.
